Overview #
China’s e-commerce platforms — Taobao/Tmall (Alibaba), JD.com, and Pinduoduo — are where most counterfeiting happens online. Each platform operates a trademark complaint system that lets rights holders request the removal of infringing listings quickly and at low cost.
Alibaba (Taobao / Tmall) #
Alibaba operates the Alibaba Intellectual Property Protection Platform (IPP), where verified rights holders can:
- Submit trademark certificates and proof of infringement.
- Request takedown of infringing product listings.
- Track the status of complaints.
Verified rights holders receive faster, prioritized handling.
JD.com #
JD.com has a similar IP complaint portal. Rights holders register their trademark, submit evidence of infringement, and request removal of counterfeit listings. JD also operates brand-protection programs for verified brands.
Pinduoduo #
Pinduoduo’s IP protection system allows rights holders to file takedown requests for infringing listings. Given Pinduoduo’s scale and price-sensitive market, counterfeit listings can appear quickly, making ongoing monitoring important.
Effective Platform Enforcement Workflow #
- Register your trademark in China — most platforms require a Chinese registration (or filing receipt).
- Verify your rights on each platform’s IP protection system.
- Monitor for infringing listings using automated tools.
- File takedowns with clear evidence: your certificate, the infringing listing URL, and comparison screenshots.
- Escalate repeat infringers to offline enforcement (AMR raids or litigation) if platform takedowns are insufficient.
Why It Matters #
Platform takedowns are the fastest, cheapest way to reduce online counterfeiting. Combined with a registered trademark and offline enforcement, they form a complete anti-counterfeiting strategy.
