Overview #
After filing, several administrative procedures may be useful: division of a multi-class application, withdrawal of an application, and amending the specification of goods and services. Understanding these helps you manage your application efficiently.
Specifying Goods and Services #
When you file, you must list your goods and services from CNIPA’s classification list. Tips for a strong specification:
- Use precise, standard descriptions rather than vague or broad language.
- Match items to your actual products or services.
- Cover future offerings where they are reasonably foreseeable.
- Avoid items you do not intend to use — they add cost without real value.
Division of a Multi-Class Application #
If your application covers several classes and one class faces an objection, you can request division — splitting the application so the unopposed classes can proceed to registration while the contested class is resolved separately. This prevents a single problem from delaying your entire mark.
Withdrawal of an Application #
You may withdraw a pending application at any time before registration. Common reasons include:
- You decide not to pursue a particular class or mark.
- You are re-filing with a better strategy (e.g. a stronger mark or corrected specification).
- A settlement or coexistence agreement makes the application unnecessary.
Withdrawal is final — the application is abandoned and cannot be revived.
Other Post-Filing Actions #
- Amendment of the specification — deleting items is generally allowed; adding new items is not permitted after filing.
- Change of applicant name or address — must be recorded with CNIPA.
- Responding to office actions — within the deadlines set by the examiner.
